Why choose Compostable Packaging?

We believe that the current way of doing business is unsustainable and harmful for the environment. We are facing a global crisis of climate change and plastic pollution, and we need to change our economic model from linear to circular.

One of our key suppliers, BioPak is a leader in this transformation, offering plant-based products that are designed to reduce environmental impact at every stage of their life cycle. Their products are made from innovative materials that come from sustainable and renewable sources, such as reclaimed, recycled materials and FSC™ wood. These materials have a smaller carbon footprint than conventional plastics.

Additionally, compostable packaging can help divert food waste from landfill, avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions that result from decomposing organic matter. Food waste and compostable packaging can go together in the same bin and be converted into valuable compost, often reducing the cost of waste collections for our customers.

The Ward Impact

By choosing BioPak packaging we have contributed to positive change!

We Avoided 330,059 Kg of Plastic

Composting for the Future

We see composting as the best end-of-life solution for food waste and compostable foodservice packaging – now and in the future.

Instead of adding to landfill, we can turn food and packaging waste into a nutrient-rich resource that captures carbon, promotes healthy soil, and has flow-on effects for plants and the planet.

Our Partner, Compost Connect is a not-for-profit initiative committed to education, lifting composting rates, and connecting foodservice businesses to commercial composters. Their aim is to divert organic waste from landfill by helping to connect business owners to organic waste pick-up services.

We see certified compostable packaging as the ideal vehicle to curb food waste. That’s because it makes disposing of food waste easy – everything can go in the one bin.

Compostable Packaging Challenges:

Disposal - Making sure compostable packaging ends up in the right place remains an ongoing challenge. There’s currently no national mandate to implement food and organic waste collection (FOGO) in Australia and New Zealand.

Materials - In a perfect world, all compostable packaging would be certified home compostable. But that’s not the case, yet. Compostable materials continue to improve and evolve – watch this space.

Greenwashing - Greenwashing is everywhere in the packaging industry. Products may claim they’re compostable to win over consumers, but without certifications, these claims are likely to be greenwashing.

What You Can Do, Now

Together, we can make a difference, tackle these challenges, and encourage widespread change.
So, while you’re sitting tight waiting for more material innovation and composting infrastructure to be built, here’s what you can do.

1. Encourage your local council to implement firmer targets and stronger regulations. Sign the petition from Compost Connect or write a letter to your MP.
2. If you’re an individual, support businesses with a composting facility in place.
3. If you’re a business, check if a compost pick-up service is available in your area.
4. Get familiar with the Certified Compostable Logo (the only source of truth in Australia and New Zealand) so you can support businesses doing the right thing and combat greenwashing.
